| Q: What is D.P.I.? | ||||||
| A: Dots Per Inch (dpi) A measurement of output device resolution and quality. Measures the number of dots a printer can print per inch, both horizontally and vertically. Recommended DPI for printing is usually 300 dpi, but can go higher and lower depending on the output device and intent of use. ex: A 600 dpi printer can print 360,000 (600 by 600) dots on one square inch of paper. Files appear blurier the lower the resolution. For example, pictures placed on a web site only have a dpi of 72. This is because monitors only display images at 72 dpi. Any higher would simply cause a file size to get larger. If you place a picture from a web site on file then, print it off of a laser or bubble jet printer, you can see that it appears fuzzy. Place it next to a high-resolution image (300 dpi and up), then print it and you will see what we mean. |
